Three Days on the Wall

During a recent brief trip to the UK I found I had time for a short outing, wanting something reasonably physical yet educational. During a recent brief trip to the UK I found I had time for a short outing, wanting something reasonably physical yet educational. I of course knew something about Hadrian's Wall from school days, and wanted to see it. With the prompt and flexible help of Mickledore Travel, I was able to spend three days hiking the best parts of the Wall, four nights in great B&Bs, was provided good maps and directions and suggestions, all rather at the last minute (never have been a good long range planner...). I hiked from Corbridge in the east to Gilsland in the west, appreciated the frequent and very accessible train service to and from my base in southern England (wish we had train service like this in the States), and really had a marvelous time, meeting interesting people, finding everyone helpful and accommodating. For a few wonderful days I was with the Roman army manning the Wall and fighting off those pesky Scots and Picts!

Rating for tour operator:

Mickledore Travel was prompt, efficient, very helpful in helping me arrange this trip, all done on-line, one or two telephone calls. I'd certainly use them again.

Hadrian's wall walking heaven

My sister and I walked the Hadrian's wall path west to east at the end of June. We booked our accomodation through Mickledore holidays. To cross the UK from coast to coast is a special thing to do. We enjoyed every day and met some fascinating people. The history of the area was with us all the way and the Roman sites we went to see were well worth spending time at, long distance walk or not! Mickledore were fantastic from start to finish! Their booking process was straightforward and they were very knowledgeable about the routes and options for the distance to be covered each day. The staff tailored the holiday to suit our wishes and our accomodation was booked as soon as the deposit was paid. I will definately book with Mickledore again! I've got the bug regarding long distance walks and I trust Mickledore to do a fantastic job every time!

GLORIOUS HADRIAN'S WALL WALK

As a novice solo walker, I chose a self-guided walking holiday along Hadrian's Wall because I wanted the re-assurance of following a path where I couldn't get lost. As a novice solo walker, I chose a self-guided walking holiday along Hadrian's Wall because I wanted the re-assurance of following a path where I couldn't get lost. I chose the middle, beautiful bit of the walk from Corbridge to Gilsland with an extra night at Twice Brewed, as recommended, to explore Housesteads and Vindolanda. The B&Bs were fantastic and choosing to have my bag hauled between B&Bs was a good move - all I needed to carry was my daypack. Because the B&Bs are not near shops, it was also a good move to get a packed lunch. Although the terrain of the first day's walk was easy, it was too near the B 6318 and I found the cars quite distracting. I loved the second day's walk from Humshaugh to Twice Brewed. The trail climbed up into the fells and far away from the road - it was so peaceful and beautiful with sweeping views to the north and south and sheep all around. Day 2 was a long walk, the description said 13 miles, but my pedometer read 14.7 miles by the end of the day, but I would do it again in a heartbeat, it was so lovely. Day 3 was meant to be a rest day to recover energy, but I walked another 9.3 miles around Housesteads and to pick up a bit of the wall I didn't walk on Day 2. My last day had some quite steep areas, but the trail is clear and there are stone steps in the most difficult places. I learned a lot of history on this walk which has piqued my interest in learning more - How many times DID the Romans have to fend off those vicious Barbarian attacks?, or was the wall more of a 'work program' to keep the legionnaires busy? This walk is a perfect walk for first time solo walkers, but experienced walkers would find it very rewarding, as well.

When I decided I would like to take a walking holiday, I looked at several websites that offered various locations and services before choosing Mickledore Travel. Their website is very clear, they offer a variety of walks in different locations and terrains. When I had questions phones were answered quickly and email queries were answered the same day. When my information pack arrived in the post about 6 weeks before my walk, I was amazed at how comprehensive it was; bus schedules, recommended restaurants (by town) were listed with contact phone numbers, tags for my bags (with all destinations listed), list of B&Bs with all contact information, and best of all were the maps. Two maps were included, one was a waterproof, folding map with the whole wall shown in sections; this was perfect for the overview and planning the next stage. The other 'map' was actually a guide book; a copy of "Hadrian's Wall Path" by Henry Stedman; it was this map book with detailed line drawn maps that I carried in my pocket and referred to as I walked, and read at night to prepare for the next day. Every group of walkers I met (except for one group from the USA) carried this book, but when I asked, everyone told me they had to buy it separately. Mickeldore provided it as a matter of course. I most certainly 'walk with Michledore' again.

A very well organised holiday

My wife and I walked along Hadrian's Wall, from Corbridge to Carlisle during the last week of July. The accommodation organised for us by Mickledore was very good, as were the pubs they recommended for evening means. Everything worked out perfectly

Mickledore promised to organise everything perfectly for us and they didn't let us down. They arranged very good accommodation and provided excellent tips for places to eat in the evenings. Our luggage duly arrived without a hitch and the walking/transport directions they provided were spot on. We would definitely use them again

Getting away from everything ...

We walked the whole length of Hadrian's wall. We forgot about eveything else than just walking, looking at the wonderful scenery, and trying to find a place to have coffee once in a while. There were four of us, average age 58.

We booked the 6 night, 5 day hike from Corbridge to Carlisle along Hadrian's Wall in the UK through Mickledore Travel. The hike along the wall was beautiful and we were lucky to enjoy sunny weather all 5 days. This is the perfect holiday for couples who want to see the countryside, enjoy some history and visit some of the smaller towns along the way. The food was great at every stop and we found that the full English breakfasts at each of the B&Bs carried us through to dinner with a small snack mid-day. Having our luggage transferred between each stop made it easy to pack what we needed with out the concern of being overburdened on our hike. A wonderful way to travel!

Rating for tour operator:

Customer service was excellent and bookings with B&Bs were all great. Mickledore even let our hosts know that we were on our Honeymoon which was very nice as a couple of the B&Bs made sure our stay was extra special. The hiking itinerary was perfectly balanced and documentation provided for our route and meal planning was very helpful. We look forward to booking another trip with them in the future!

Superb Hadrian's Wall walk

We walked for 4 days from Newcastle to Carlisle - about 15 miles a day. We stayed at excellent B&Bs, had a fabulous 4 days walking - despite the hills on days 2 & 3, and saw spectacular views.
