Journey Latin America was the operator. They got the big things right but the devil was in the details . . . which they missed.

Thanks. We have received your additional comments on this and will be in touch directly.

A Trip of Two Very Unequal Parts

Five weeks bespoke, 2 weeks Brazil, 3 Bolivia. Flew back to UK from Lima. Brazil segment pretty much as expected. A few minor issues but places visited superbly varied with lots of free time. Guides and drivers highly professional. I’d give this a Good. Bolivia a bit of a shambles. Guides more like minders, not so well-educated, limited English, didn’t add that much value. Two drivers were a disgrace, thought I’d be killed when one answered mobile on a bend (mountain road) with solid yellow lines while overtaking a double-length lorry. Itinerary felt crammed, mind and bum-numbing hours spent in vehicles, vast distances which were not communicated beforehand. Two separate 3-day segments of 1100 and 1400 km much on unpaved roads. Insufficient free time. Less moving ever onwards and less doing would definitely have been more. I’d give this no more than an Average. Local agents were flexible enough, however, to change the itinerary three times when it was obviously not working. Shouldn’t have been necessary but full marks to them, also to the one ‘feisty mama’ guide who looked after me when I had altitude sickness.

Rating for tour operator:

Consultant was efficient, knowledgeable and very pleasant to deal with but, with hindsight, did not take my needs sufficiently into account. If you say you’re ‘quiet, reflective and spiritual’ and ‘need lots of space and me-time’ you don’t expect to be mercilessly trundled around Bolivia like a foie-gras goose (and indeed I wasn’t in Brazil). This segment felt like bespoke-JLA but not bespoke-Anna. Paperwork appeared impressive but was actually peppered with inaccuracies and omissions; in one instance what was described was, on the ground, plain crazy-impossible. Despite some wonderful memories and experiences, for the price paid I found the trip fell well short of my expectations. Because of all of the above, and despite Brazil, I’m afraid I can only give a score of Average.

We’re pleased you enjoyed the Brazil section of your trip though disappointed you were not as impressed with Bolivia and were unfortunately struck down with altitude sickness.

The isolated rural towns and villages of the remote Bolivian interior are culturally rich though admittedly geography necessitates travelling some long distances to view key sites. However, a great deal of consideration goes into the itineraries we design to maximise enjoyment and based on our first hand experience. We always aim to give a good reflection of what to expect in our descriptions and we detail the distances covered, length of journey and relevant altitudes reached in all our proposal itineraries. As a matter of course, we will review this in light of your comments and look at how we can be as clear as possible in our discussions at the booking stage.

With regards to the driving standards, we have worked very closely with all our Latin American partners to endeavour to raise safety standards throughout the Continent emphasising that safe and courteous driving is non-negotiable. This has been addressed with the transport provider and driver.

We will take on board all your comments. On a more positive note, we’re glad you still had some wonderful memories and the local agents were flexible in altering the planned itinerary at your request as well as being considerate and caring when you were adversely affected by the high altitudes.

Fantastic 3 weeks in a truly spectacular part of the world

We did a 3 week tour of the Highlights of the Andes, this being Peru, Bolivia and Chile. It was quite a packed itinerary that involved a fair amount of travelling .However it was worth every minute and we LOVED this trip. Such incredible diverse landscapes and amazing scenery and interesting insight into the cultures of the indigenous people of Peru and Bolivia . Lots of Inca history too .

This is the second time in consecutive years that we have travelled with Journey Latin America . I would not travel with any other tour operator to this continent . Their knowledge of the continent is second to none and the tour operators they use locally are superb . Both holidays have run like clockwork all local representatives are helpful, courteous . I cannot fault them and would recommend them 100 percent .

The varied experiences of Mexico

We wanted a mix of the relaxing and the informative, which Journey Latin America provided. The relaxation days in beautiful surroundings like the Haciendas and Tulum contrasted well with the fascinating excursions to ancient sites.

Jacana Journey

This was a journey across South America from Rio de Janeiro to Lima. I have travelled to South America before, but particularly wanted to see Iguazu Falls, La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu. This holiday included them all. It was really well planned with an excellent guide. The memories of this holiday will stay with me forever.

Exceptional experience of nature in Ecuador

Our trip started with a three night stay at Mashpi Lodge which was an excellent experience in the cloud forest. This was followed by a week traveling by road through Ecuador from Quito to Guayaquil. Finally we had a week travelling on a catamaran through the Galapagos Islands experiencing the amazing wildlife.

Back to South America.

I visited the area for the first time in 2017 on a mix of group tour and private arrangement. I wanted more time in Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile so this time I had a private arrangement for a good week in each of those cities walking and visiting museums plus a week travelling in Paraguay. A great time all round.
