A bespoke rail trip to a wedding in Finland

Train and ferries all the way, brilliantly arranged for us by Ffestiniog Travel. The journey was a ‘circular’ from Macclesfield (Cheshire) via London, Brussels, Hamburg, Kiel (ferry), Gothenburg, Oslo, Umeå (ferry), Vaasa, Turku (ferry), Stockholm, Copenhagen, Cologne and back to Macclesfield. ,

Ffestiniog Travel are part of the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway based in Porthmadog. We had never used them before, but when this trip for a wedding in Finland (having flown there many times) became possible, we contacted Kate Berry to see if it was viable, It was, and once we had established the types of hotels etc, Kate arranged everything. Excellent hotels, perfect connections, reserved seats and cabins and sleeper train (to Umeå). Brilliant trip!

An enjoyable holiday, despite some transport problems which were partly due to the exceptionally wet weather

A varied itinerary based in Innsbruck and Vienna, with some good excursions from Innsbruck. The excursions were a good mix of transport interest and general sightseeing. Our activities in Vienna were curtailed due to exceptional rainfall.

I considered that they really went the extra mile when sorting out difficulties with our return journey. A return journey by air was quickly organised when it became clear that the trains would not be running for some days due to serious flooding in Austria

Discovering Corsica by rail

We travelled from Kendal in Cumbria via Eurostar through France to Corsica where we "explored" the island by train before retracing our steps. Along the way we spent enjoyable time in London, Lyon, Marseille , Nice , Bastia , Calvi, Ajaccio ,Toulon and Lille..

Very good communication with Ffestiniog Travel, who did all the bookings for rail travel and hotels, giving a personalised itinerary to follow with all seat numbers and hotel locations clearly identified for convenience. Excellent service. All connections worked well.

Bespoke rail tour of Holland, Germany and Switzerland.

The journey took us from London to Amsterdam (for 4 nights) by Eurostar, then by train to Boppard for a day cruise on the Rhine before moving on to Switzerland with a visit to the Rhine Falls, Chur (including a trip on the Bernina Bahn to Italy). The it was on to Interlaken (with lunch on the Glacier Express enroute) for a trip up the Jungfrau and cruise on Lake Thun) before moving on to Lucerne for a trip up Mt Pilatus, before heading home ...

We based the holiday on an extended version of their Rhine - Sea to Source tour. It was very easy to negotiate an itinerary that gave us what we wanted and appeared workable. Communications from them throughout was excellent - we had unexpected problems due to floods at Brienz which were passed on to us by Ffestiniog Travel while we were abroad, including the advice of how to deal with the issue when we got to that part of the holiday.

Exactly what we wanted

Our holiday was by air to Luzern. Apart from the inevitable flight delays, travel was as planned. The Hotel Monopol suited us very well. It is very central, next door to rail, bus and boat services. We had a large room with plenty of storage space for our belongings. The room was well presented and included a settee, two chairs and a table as well as the bed. The bathroom was a good size with two washbasins, and a bath with shower over...

The bathroom was a good size with two washbasins, and a bath with shower over. Ffestiniog Travel arranged Swiss Passes for us, which gave free travel on almost all public transport and admission to many museums. We had some enjoyable days out, including to Pilatus and the Rigi. Luzern is a good centre for many attractions, and has a wide range of restaurants for evening meals.

We sent our initial enquiry to Ffestiniog Travel and they responded with a quotation within 24 hours. This suited us so we booked straightaway, which was promptly acknowledged. The travel documents came 10 days before the holiday, and were all in order. They had already booked to aircraft seats for us, which meant all we had to do was check in online. The hotel was expecting us and, although this was not arranged by Ffestiniog Travel, our bags which were sent in advance were waiting for us at the hotel. It all worked very well - the holiday "did what it said on the tin"!
