Exploring Sicily with With People who Love It

Peter Sommer 's " Exploring Sicily " tour was memorable on many, many levels . Reflecting on this trip since my return home, I think it was not just because of the depth of knowledge & courtesy of the guides, the impeccable organisation, the great accommodation & wonderful meals but also because we were shown Sicily by people who really love it & made us respect & love it too.

Exploring Sicily

This was a very special holiday led by Michael Metcalfe, and we couldn't have had a better leader, because Michael absolutely made the history of Sicily come alive for us with the wonderful stories that he told us about the ruins. But the trip was not just about ruins it encompassed the whole story of Sicily, as well as delicious food & wine & excellent accomodation we saw so much of the country & met such lovely welcoming people

Fabulous Tour!

This tour was amazing! The itinerary, accommodations and food were fabulous. There is no way we could have seen and learned so much on our own or with any other tour. Peter was incredibly knowledgeable, informative, enthusiastic and FUN. Cem was such an amazing "fixer," we wanted to bring him home with us. Definitely signing up for more Peter Sommers tours!

Istanbul, but wider and deeper

Peter Sommer Travels delivered all that they promised and more. An impeccably-planned itinerary, delivered in full and with careful attention to every detail. Our guide, a Professor of Byzantine and Roman archaeology with many years' experience of Istanbul, was complemented by a local guide of unfailing charm, knowledge and energy. It was a wonderful holiday.

Another lovely gulet trip in the Greek Islands

Travelling on the beautiful Aegean Clipper, we visited 9 of the Dodecanese Islands - from Samos to Rhodes. Lots of fresh food, some swimming, beautiful blue skies & blue seas. We visited many places - extraordinary scenery in the volcanic crater on Nisyros; the sublime - the cave where St John received the Revelation on Patmos; the quaint - the Pigmy Elephant Museum on Tilos. Small company running mainly archaeologically focused holidays. Some of these use motor-yachts (gulets) - these are my favourites, as you get both the experience of a lovely boat holiday, and you get to visit fascinating sites with excellent guides to explain & interpret them for you.

Nota's knowledge however is absolutely brilliant. Bringing the huge and really ancient site like Hattusha to life in combination with the artefacts from the museums is quite an achievement. Travelling through Cappadocia, Nota definitely found a way to explain this complex Byzantine art in such a way that it sticks to the mind. Amazing! The walks were a real treat; not too strenuous, not too long and well paced. This is exactly what I expected to find in the Cappadocian landscape. The utter silence of the place with only the rustling of the leaves, the murmur of the streams and the song of an occasional bird. All in all, a wonderful experience that I can highly recommend!

Rating for tour operator:

Excellent guiding and clear explanations. Nota always made sure we really understood the meaning and/or importance of each place where we stopped. Yet the programme was never overloaded and always well balanced.
