Rhine Valley by Ronald, 6 Jan 2025

Excellent Rhine Valley Walking Tour

We had a perfect, week-long walk down the Rhine valley which included great views, great small hotels, great wine, and great food. While we expected the area to be frequented by tourists, we found the majority of the time we were on our own to enjoy the views and towns. Sure, Koblenz has some cruise boats, but our experience felt as authentic as any holiday we have taken, the reputation as an attraction for visitors notwithstanding.

The tour was well organized with every logistical detail without a hitch and every recommendation right-on. We take an On-Foot walk annually and have found them to be among the best holiday's we have had.

Gorgeous Greece

Walking on the island of Naxos was wonderful. There was such a variety of terrain and we hardly saw other travelers on many of the walks. Our hotel was spectacular as well. We hope to return!

Basque Pyrenees to San Sebastian

This was a fantastic and varied walk, beginning in the mountains, then opening out as we neared the coast, veering into France for a bit, before finally arriving in San Sebastian. The itinerary even included a couple of short boat rides, which were fun. Our accommodations along the way were fantastic and always a welcome rest at the end of each day. We had some gorgeous views along the way, which kept us going, especially after some of the steeper climbs. And we really enjoyed the opportunity to take a bit of a detour to "bag a French peak" along the way. Our local guide, though we never actually met him, had great recommendations for fun places to eat and other helpful advice. The route notes provided by On Foot, along with the electronic route data they provided for the Pocket Earth app, made navigating easy and worry free. It was a wonderful eight days in the hills and along the coast!

Rating for tour operator:

We felt the whole trip was extremely well organized and everything went very smoothly. The help, guidance and advice we received from the On Foot team in planning our trip was excellent, and we couldn’t have asked for more. We did two hikes back-to-back, and their coordination and advice about our travel details between and at the end of each hike (including details about connecting trains and buses) was very useful and beyond what we expected for the sections of our trip which they weren’t planning. The local guide contacts were also super helpful, responsive and a pleasure to work with.

Eight days in Catalonia and the Priorat

We had a fabulous trip, walking through very quiet and unspoiled countryside with a welcoming and cozy hotel waiting for us at the end of each day. The food and wine was wonderful and the hosts were always eager to talk to us about their local specialties. We had a few rainy days, but mostly the weather was fine and perfect for walking. We definitely recommend On Foot and are already looking into a future trip with them.

Fabulous walking holiday

This was our 8th self-guided walking trip with On Foot Holidays. We flew to Tenerife then caught a ferry to La Gomera, our base for the week. The walking was superb, following carefully planned routes through stunning, unspoilt mountainous scenery around the island. The accommodation en route was excellent, and the hosts very welcoming.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays provided excellent route maps and detailed notes, so getting lost was not a problem. A local route adviser was always available by phone to give assistance, provide weather forecasts or to book restaurants. Overall, On Foot Holidays provide excellent customer service, from original booking right through to returning home.

La Gomera, another fabulous holiday with On Foot

This was our 11th holiday with On Foot, and definitely up there with the best. Fascinating and varied landscapes on the volcanic island. The cloud forest was unique. The walking was on good paths. some challenging uphills, but with options to miss those if you wish. Lovely hotels with excellent breakfasts, and a mix of restaurants to try in the evenings. A couple of nights in the Parador in San Sebastián at the end of the walk was the perfect finish...

On Foot now have a new App with all the maps and information for the walk. There really isn't any excuse for taking a wrong turning!

Rating for tour operator:

We always look forward to our holidays with On Foot. We are so well looked after from booking through to the trip home. The whole team is great to deal with. Advice and recommendations are always to hand, and we have learnt will always be honest and trustworthy. Their new App which contains all the information for the holiday as well as the maps and navigation guidance will be a great asset when it is rolled out to other routes.

Walking through Tuscany

Excellent hiking trip walking through rolling hills of Tuscany and then climbing up to hilltop towns at the end of the day. The countryside is beautiful, even when it rained. Bring poles for sure as the clay soil in Tuscany is incredibly slippery in the rain. We stayed an extra night in Montalcino and 2 nights in Montepulciano. Highly recommend as there is so much to see around and in the towns.

My walk through the Karst countryside was a wonderful way to experience a small section of Slovenia. The App developed by On Foot Holidays both kept me on track and gave interesting snippets of the areas I passed through, and was ideal for a solo walker. Although I also carried the maps provided, I found I didn't need them. My route traversed woods, farmland and small villages via a combination of walking tracks, gravel roads and minor surfaced roads. Even the final stage between Oipcina and Trieste, where I expected to spend a large part of the day along busy roads, took me through woodland reserves, initially with expansive views of the Gulf of Trieste. Highlights were the wildflower display over Nanos while on route to Vipava, and my visit to the spectacular Skocjan Caves. My accommodation was of a high standard, and the generous and flavorsome meals provided by my hosts were culinary delights. It was a pleasure to not have to carry a backpack, and my luggage was always delivered to my evening accommodation promptly by my cheerful and courteous driver.

Rating for tour operator:

I found On Foot Holidays to be very professional, highly organised, and very easy to communicate with. The background detail was informative, and the route information was spot on. Additional information such as train and bus details and restaurant recommendations were very welcome.
