Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT Nepal by David Buccigrossi, 23 Aug 2022

Amazing step back into former times

Debbie and I have trekked six times in the Himalaya over a total of eight months. This trek leads one through multiple ecological zones, eventually into the Dolpo region of Nepal, where the way of life is still largely as it was decades ago. There is some encroachment of modernity, but nothing compared with most other areas of Nepal. We saw this firsthand as we descended into the Kali Gandaki River Valley of Annapurna fame at the end of our trip...

This trek leads one through multiple ecological zones, eventually into the Dolpo region of Nepal, where the way of life is still largely as it was decades ago. There is some encroachment of modernity, but nothing compared with most other areas of Nepal. We saw this firsthand as we descended into the Kali Gandaki River Valley of Annapurna fame at the end of our trip. We had trekked there in 1984 and 1989 and the changes are significant. Your friends may not know where Dolpo is, but you will never forget it.

Rating for tour operator:

Dolpo requires perseverance and flexibility, something The Mountain Company possesses in abundance. The very professional staff were great fun and wonderful to get to know. This company also treats its porters very well. The planning was top notch and incorporated adequate time for acclimatization. This is our third trip with The Mountain Company, and I would give them our highest recommendation and without reservation.

Encountered a variety of wild life … different species of birds, blue sheeps and a SNOW LEOPARD. Though it is a strenuous trek, it is well worth the effort because the remoteness enable one to connect with oneself and Mother Nature by taking one away from the hectic pace of modern life. One also gets a sense of history and lives in this region by interacting with friendly villagers and visiting gompas/monasteries.

Rating for tour operator:

The Mountain Company (TMC) offers a variety of trekking holidays. Each trek is well researched and are tested by TMC guides. The itineraries are designed for getting the best experience and acclimatisation when altitude is involved. Roland, the Managing Director, is very responsive to all inquiries. He is committed to responsible and ethical tourism. He ensures no garbage is left behind. He also ensures the well-being and safety of clients and crew are well look after. Roland set up a Hardship Fund so the trekking crew got paid even though there was no trekking during COVID. The crew really appreciate the caring nature of Roland. In return, they show their appreciation by taking care of the trekkers. I have completed five treks with TMC since 2015. If no COVID, I would have completed a couple more. Looking forward to more trekking with TMC!

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

There are many rewards for doing this remote and challenging trek in a beautiful area of Nepal. It's a one-way trek so no doubling back. There are few other trekkers on the trail. You get a variety of scenery and landscapes, including a few villages lower down. If you're at base camp in climbing season then you might be lucky to meet a few climbers. The views of Dhaulagiri and other mountains towering over you at close quarters are captivating...

Rating for tour operator:

I was very happy with my first-ever trekking experience with The Mountain Company. From pre-departure to the trek itself I was really impressed with the professional standard and the super-friendly and caring crew. The food was particularly good and so was the excellent level of communication throughout. Safety and good service were clear priorities. I’d definitely recommend The Mountain Company to others and trek with them again.

The Mountain Company (TMC) led by Roland Hunter provide a personal service, aimed at providing a fantastic and safe experience for both trekkers and support crew in the wild environment of the Himalaya. Always available to chat pre trip, Roland endeavours to meet every trekker in Kathmandu before and after the trek and seeks a review of your experience post event which he does take seriously. I have already booked another trek this year with TMC!

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek - Nepal

This was a remote and challenging trek. TMC were excellent in both communication and the services provided on the ground. The food provided on the trek was the best we’ve ever had and nothing was too much trouble.

Rating for tour operator:

After trekking in Nepal with other companies, we decided to give TMC a go. Well, we weren’t disappointed. From the excellent and regular community provided pre, during and post trek through to services on the ground, great logistics and delightful and varied food. Nothing was too much trouble and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking to trek in Nepal or elsewhere in the Himalaya or Karakoram ranges. We’ve signed up again with TMC for Pakistan this year - after all, once you’re on to a good thing stick with it!

A trek that met all hopes and more

Despite the demands of the flights, we were repeatedly reassured by the organising in place. We had outings and acclimatisation that stood us in good stead for the trekking. I was pleasantly amazed at what I saw, felt and was able to achieve. All delivered by people who were good to be with.

All aspects of preparation and activity were well done. We were well instructed and briefed by Roland and queries were rapidly addressed. Physical challenges of the trek were well anticipated. I felt that nothing lacked for consideration, energy and initiative. Really nice, capable people.

Dhaulagiri Circuit -20 wonderful days up to 5500m

Every morning started with a cup of hot tea brought to the tend by our sherpas- regardless if minus 20 grade celcius in 5000m or in the warmer valley. We lived for 3 weeks with nature - started in the valley walking up the 5000m pass - a unique experince none of us could have had without the guidance and support of the TMC team.

Delights of Dhaulagiri, Nepal

What a fantastic country with superb people. Nepal may be poor but its people and culture are rich. This trek is a chance to loose yourself in the remote areas of Nepal where few people travel. It provides a seamless transition from hot and humid valleys to the snowy wilderness of the high areas surrounding Dhaulagiri. Butterflies abound and raptors soar.

Rating for tour operator:

The Mountain Company have returned to Nepal following the COVID restrictions and the Dhaulagiri Circuit was one of the first treks. Their attention to post COVID precautions was faultless and all the team remained fit and healthy. Likewise the safety provisions during the tented 15 day trek sets them aside in particular their equipment and procedures for dealing with altitude related conditions. This gave reassurance and allowed the trekking team to enjoy the fantastic scenery, the superb service and the attenuative crew who always had a smile. I can safely say I have never had freshly cooked chips served at altitude before. Well done The Mountain Company ably led by Roland Hunter who takes a personal overview of all details. Also well done to the support team including Jason Day, Chandra Bahadur Rai, Arjun, Dorjee, Bal, Jons Lama , Robin and the mules!.

We, a group of 6 friends and hikers in the UK, planned a trek from Lukla to Gokyo Ri and return via Renjo La with sightseeing in Kathmandu at the start and end, The Mountain Company and Roland Hunter put our hopes into a reality producing a fantastic experience with 16 days trekking and 5 days in Kathmandu. We were met at the airport and taken to our hotel in Kathmandu, which did not disappoint, had a briefing with Roland, an information pack and advice about the area and money changing. A 'sightseeing' day in Kathmandu was very good with excellent transport, driver and a very informative guide. The trek was tailored to allow time for acclimatisation and to enjoy the scenery and photographs. The 3 guides were helpful, well informed and knowledgeable about the route, area and culture and kept to a pace for our comfort, we were also supported by 3 excellent porters. The numbers clearly allowed for any eventualities that may have occurred and a safe trek. The Tea Houses we stayed in were of a good standard both for sleeping and eating. On returning to our hotel in Kathmandu we had another great tour of a different area and also more advice about other sights and places we may consider. Then transport to the airport for our departure. All of our group agreed we could not have had a better first experience to Nepal.

Rating for tour operator:

The Mountain Company and Roland Hunter provided an excellent, memorable and enjoyable experience and I cannot rate them high enough. Their website has all the information you need regarding what to expect, kit required, entry requirements and how to fill the forms in, everything was covered, any other questions emailed were always answered within a day and usually an hour or so, but the information was often on their website, we were kept updated about the changing entry requirements with regard to Covid. Whilst on the trek the guides carried a satellite phone for safety and our condition was monitored every evening. On the trek and in Kathmandu there was always the option to contact them for help, advice, form filling and ticket printing for our return with a de-brief at the end for our thoughts.
