Imperial Cities Tour, Morocco

We visited all the imperial cities, along w the Todra Gorge, the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou, and a night camping in the Sahara via camel rides. We covered a LOT of miles and were able to see many types of Moroccan countryside, which was great. Group was 15-16 people, and by the 2nd day we were all friends and getting along famously!

Mohammed is basically a walking encyclopedia on everything Moroccan. He was intelligent, insightful, and was always able to answer whatever questions we posed to him. He was also a very funny guy and engaging, making him great to hang out with and be around. Abdul was our driver, and a man of few words but always smiling! But he was an amazing and competent driver, we always felt safe while riding in the van.

THE HOLIDAY. Morocco is different – exotic yet accessible places, proud yet friendly people, ancient yet modern cultures, Islamic yet democratic government. There’s no other place like it. In eight days of late winter we investigated the four Imperial Cities, crept through the Byzantine medinas, marveled at the UNESCO World Heritage sites, rode camels and camped in the starlit Sahara, learned crafts of the Berber and Amazir people, were captivated by Moorish architecture, and scrambled over the High Atlas Mountains. This is not a tour for the faint-of-heart – there’s a lot happening but it is so worth it! Highly recommend this tour for those who enjoy an active and enlightening travel experience.

Rating for tour operator:

It’s all about the guide. Yes, the tour operator, Nomadic-Tours, was flawless. Pre-departure information and logistics were very good, but the actual experience depends highly on the person leading, and our man Younes was fantastic. He ought to be training all the other guides. Younes was fun, informative, personable, patient, candid, and caring. He cares about his country and his people, he cares about the quality of his tours, and he cares about the people in his charge (us). Younes is young but already carries the air of an experienced and comfortable leader. Always in his trademark black leather jackets and casual shades, he was nonetheless highly organized and ever ready for anything that came up, including unanticipated roadside events. He kept an eye on each of us without being obtrusive. Besides that, everywhere we went, he seemed to know everyone in Morocco! Ask for a tour with Younes. The other recommendation I can make is to take a Kindle or recorded novel about Morocco with you and read or listen to it while flying and then traveling about in the van or bus. A good choice would be “The Caliph’s House” by Tahir Shah. It will bring added depth of culture and a heightened sense of adventure to the journey. Do it!

Hello David, Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful review. We are really pleased that you not only loved Morocco the country, but Younes and the whole experience of booking with Nomadic Tours. Younes is a top guide and very much part of our Nomadic family, we are very proud to have him in our team. We wish you happy and safe future travels. Best wishes, Mark & the Nomadic team.
