Journey through Western Isles by Big D, 9 Jul 2017
Holiday Rating:

A great trip through the Outer Hebrides, in wild and stunning scenery, learning something of their history and way of life of the people.

Spent 10 nights in the Outer Hebrides, starting in Castlebay, Barra, and staying 2 nights on each "island", finishing up in Lewis and returning to mainland at Ullapool. We'd started our holiday in Oban where we drove on to the ferry to Castlebay. All our ferries and accommodation (BandB) were included in the package from Kidd McKinlay. The arrangements worked superbly and the accommodation was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Orkney and Shetland

The holiday was a good experience, but the weather could have been warmer. It was good to go back to the Killiecrankie Hotel after my visit to the Islands again, in Pitlochry.

Two weeks in the Highlands

We took a fourteen day tour of the Highlands by train organised by McKinlay Kidd. It was exceptionally well organised with all train tickets, taxis, ferries and other transport all taken care of. The accommodation was excellent. It was very well put together and avoided a lot of the areas heavy with tourists, as well as introducing us to some beautiful areas of Scotland that we would not otherwise have thought to go.There was a glitch due to a problem with Scotrail which McKinlay Kidd fixed exceptionally quickly, for which we were thankful. We would happily organise another holiday with them.

Rating for tour operator:

Quick responses to emails. The holiday was well organised. We had a small glitch that was no fault of McKinlay Kidd which they quickly found an alternative for. Quality organisation.

Rail trip of the Scottish highlands and Skye

This was a personalized unescorted rail tour from Edinburgh to Glasgow with stops at Pitlochry, Inverness, Portree (Isle of Skye) and Spean Bridge (Fort William). The scenery is outstanding and the train is possibly the best way to see it. McKinlay Kidd did an excellent job of selecting accomodations and arranging all the transfers etc. Of the accomadations they chose I would especially recommend Moyness House in Inverness for its host and ...

McKinlay Kidd were extremely good in arranging a trip tailored to our requirements. They even went out of their way to accomodate the fact that our tour was part of an extended trip including arranging for our train tickets to be delivered to a hotel that they had not arranged for us then following up via email to ensure that we had received everything.

See the Orkneys differently

The tour was titled "See Orkney Differently" and that is exactly what we did. In the seven days we did three islands and had three all-day tours covering neolithic sites, nature, scenery, history etc. The tours were well organised and extremely interesting. On Westray we visited a site where an archaeological dig was taking place. The rest of the time was our own to explore. A great holiday!

The Beautiful West Highland Railway

We were amazed by the beauty of the scenery on our West Highland Railway journey. The Isle of Skye was also a wonderful experience.

We were delivered exactly what we asked for

We had a touring holiday for a first-time visit to the Hebrides, by way of Skye and ending in the North-West of Scotland with which we were already familiar. All of the accommodation was first class and the ferry trips were totally efficient and pleasant.

short break in western Highlands

This was a short excursion to celebrate a birthday. The focal point was a return journey on the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig. The hotel we stayed in was comfortable and pleasant and the food was locally sourced, mainly organic and delicious. The location was stunning.
