Challenging self guided walking holiday

Challenging self guided walking holiday

Rating for tour operator:

They organise and book accommodation along the way often in remote areas, they liaise with a local contact, they organise some of our food including packed lunches, they organise luggage transfer, they provide detailed notes and maps of the route, they provide backup lifts in event of injury or tiredness, they advise on travel to and from start and end points, they provide handbook on culture, history, food and wines of the area - excellent for armchair holidaying before and after actual holiday

Self-Guided Walking in Liguria

In early October, 2024, we walked in Liguria, starting at the village of Montalto Pavese and ending in Camogli on the Mediterranean Sea. This trail followed an ancient salt route, climbing up into the Apennines before ultimately descending to sea level. All of our accommodation, luggage transfers, and evening meals are arranged by On Foot Holidays. This was a challenging walk for us (we are in our 70s), in part because of the roughness of the ...

This was a challenging walk for us (we are in our 70s), in part because of the roughness of the trail and the amount of hill climbing, but we also ran into several days of rain, wind, and fog. On Foot does offer several route-shortening options, which we took advantage of on the really wet days.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays is a pleasure to work with. They are prompt and responsive, with an admirable attention to detail. Their walking packs are customized to one's travel plans, and contain a wealth of supporting information, including restaurant recommendations. I want particularly to mention their maps and walking directions, which are comprehensive and easy to follow. They have also recently developed a companion app that includes daily GPS-enabled topographical maps. This app provides an extra level of assurance that one is on the right track. And one more thing: they have engaged a local representative who is available for advice and assistance. This was especially helpful for us when we decided to take advantage of a couple of the route-shortening options.

Fantastic!

We were on a self-guided walking holiday in the Ligurian Hills, Italy. Our tour company made all the arrangements for our accommodation and transport of luggage. They provided paper route instructions, as well as a very good GPS map. All the hosts were welcoming and the food was excellent.

As experienced walkers, who have used several tour operators, we rate On Foot the best! They communicate clearly, are approachable and extremely knowledgeable about the walks they advertise. The information they provide is very extensive and useful.

Good food and accommodation with very friendly hosts. It is a shame that the weather was not good (remnants of Storm Boris) so we didn't get the views. The route notes, as usual with OnFoot, were very easy to follow. For most of the route there were few, if any, other walkers with the only exception being around the high point. The days are quite long and one in particular has a significant altitude gain so you do need to be fairly fit, but this 73 year old managed to full route ok. Whatever the time of year remember your waterproofs!

At all times very helpful and prompt, as was the local contact.

Adventurous walk in stunning scenery with friendly local hospitality

A self guided 6 day hike in the Ligurian hills through vineyards, woodland and open ridgeways. Staying in rural B&Bs and lovely hotels in the towns on the route. Finishing in Camogli on the Italian Riviera. The route included parts of the via del sale an ancient trading route between Genoa and the alps.

This is our second holiday with on foot. Everyone is knowledgeable about the trips they offer and extremely helpful and quick with responses to questions. Communication is superb and on both holidays we had very good local representatives. Can’t praise on foot highly enough.

A Beautiful Challenging Adventure: from the mountains to the sea.

The Ligurian Hills was a fantastic, beautiful and at times a challenging hike. We enjoyed the stunning, vast views, the fabulous food, and super hosts. The weather was perhaps our biggest challenge.

Rating for tour operator:

If Greta was our tour operator, she was fantastic. She helped to coordinate an extra taxi at the start of our adventure, answer all of our questions, and gave sound advice for our upcoming legs of the hike. If the employees of OnFootHolidays are the operators, they have been fantastic. They are so well organized, efficient, and responsive. This was our third hike with OnFootHolidays and we are looking into completing a fourth hike next year.

Walking in the Ligurian Hills, Italy (The Salt Route)

This was 6 days of walking in the Apennines, on the Salt Route from Montalto Pavese in the high hills to Camogli on the coast, The walking was tough but worth ever step, the views were amazing and the countryside totally unspoiled. We stayed at small hotels/B&Bs where the welcome was always warm and the food lovely and plentiful. We stayed at small hotels/B&Bs where the welcome was always warm and the food lovely and plentiful. It was nice to walk meeting only the very occasional other traveller and we didn't hear another English voice until we reached Camogli. We stayed at a lovely boutique hotel in Camogli for 3 nights after the walk, a fitting reward after a our fantastic walk.

Rating for tour operator:

This was our 5th On Foot Holidays walk and we wouldn't go with any other company. They provide assistance in choosing a route and where to stay. They are always available for questions and everyone is so friendly whoever picks up the phone. The pack that is provided for the walk is really excellent, with clear travel information and timetables, the daily walking notes are clear and accurate, so we never go astray (but we do download the gps route that On Foot provide to our phones just in case- a good backup) and additional information is available about the towns/local history in the pack. I would recommend On Foot Holidays to anyone and frequently do. We are already planning our next walk with them.

A demanding and thrilling walk through the solitude of the Appennines

On Foot Holidays booked us a 6 night, 5 day trek south through the Appennines on the "Salt Road" (Via di Sale). We climbed to 1700m with a 360 view over the mountains and the Po valley, and back down to the Mediterranean at Camogli. For the first three days we did not see a single other person, but wildlife and cows galore: the birdsong and the cowbells were the only things interrupting the complete silence. The walking was tough, but rewarding. The welcome was warm and the plumbing good in all the places we stayed, even in the most remote parts of the trail. We were glad not to be leading mules laden with salt, though...

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays planned and organised the whole week, including all the incidental transfers. They provided detailed trail guides for every metre of the way. The vagaries of the way marking and the simplicity of the hamlets and villages we passed through meant we sometimes puzzled for a moment or two but we were never lost and the combination of guide, map and GPS meant we were never seriously in danger of straying. The combination of fairly rigorous walking with civilised lodgings and painless baggage transfer (no backpacks!) was ideal.
