This offbeat and adventurous trip includes an 11-night safari in Zambia’s South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, using two small, owner-run operations. You’ll explore the wildlife-rich environs of South Luangwa, staying at the intimate camps of Nkwali and Tena Tena, before flying down to the Lower Zambezi for time at the renowned Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro. Along the way, you’ll enjoy superb walking safaris, day and night game drives, and boat or canoe excursions on the Zambezi River.
Days 1-3
3 nights Nkwali – South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Upon arriving in Lusaka, you’ll connect onto a light aircraft flight to Mfuwe (about 90 minutes). There you’ll be met and driven to Nkwali, located on private land just outside South Luangwa National Park, offering a tranquil setting on the banks of the Luangwa River. You should arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive. During your stay, explore the park on morning and evening drives and perhaps venture out on foot to discover the smaller wonders of the bush. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, with a focus on immersing yourself in Luangwa’s abundant wildlife.
Days 4-5
2 nights Tena Tena – South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
After a final morning activity at Nkwali, you’ll drive deeper into the park to Tena Tena, a remote camp in the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa. You’ll spend 2 nights here, where expert guides lead morning walks and game drives to reveal the prolific wildlife of this quieter corner of the park. Return in the evenings for a hearty dinner and share stories around the campfire, with the distant sounds of the African night as your soundtrack.
Days 6-9
3 nights Chiawa Camp – Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
From Tena Tena, you’ll be driven back to Mfuwe Airport for your light aircraft flight via Lusaka down to the Lower Zambezi. On arrival at the airstrip, you’ll be met and transferred to Chiawa Camp, beautifully set on the banks of the Zambezi River beneath a canopy of mahogany and acacia trees. Spend 2 nights here enjoying a variety of activities: day and night game drives, boat safaris, canoe trips, and guided walks led by some of Zambia’s top safari guides.
Days 9-11
2 nights Old Mondoro – Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia
After breakfast and a possible morning game drive, you’ll transfer to Old Mondoro, a smaller, more intimate bushcamp further downriver. Surrounded by winterthorn trees and close to a maze of channels, Old Mondoro offers especially good opportunities for walking safaris, game drives, and water-based activities such as canoeing or catch-and-release fishing. Over your 2-night stay, immerse yourself in the peace and beauty of the Lower Zambezi, where elephants, hippos, and other big game frequently wander into camp.
Day 12
You transfer by 4WD back to the Lower Zambezi airstrip for your light aircraft flight back to Lusaka Airport where you continue on your own onward arrangements.
