Romania - Walks and Monasteries

Romania - Walks and Monasteries Overview

Walking in Romania - the Painted Monasteries, Transylvania & the Danube delta - offers an in-depth exploration of 'old' Romania, with excellent walking in unspoilt landscapes of Transylvania, Moldavia and Bucovina and a boat-based excursion in the Danube Delta. Running 3 - 14 June 2025 (max 14 guests), when wildflowers are at their best.

Walking in rural Romania - the Painted Monasteries, Transylvania and the Danube delta

The mountains of Transylvania and the deep forests which surround the Orthodox painted monasteries in Bucovina largely escaped the ravages of the Ceausescu era. Remote and tranquil, these areas offer travellers an experience now very rare in western Europe - exploring on foot a landscape barely changed since the Middle Ages. In early summer, the mountain meadows are filled with wildflowers, including swathes of orchids, and horses and carts are carrying hay from first light.

Based in comfortable rural hotels and a floating boat hotel, we see the outstanding mediaeval Byzantine art of the Painted Monasteries; sample traditional Romanian dishes (organic by definition) accompanied by wines from the Black Sea; discover the rich birdlife of the Danube delta; and explore the galleries and museums of Bucharest, staying in a 4 star boutique hotel.
