4000 Islands Lao tour Overview

4000 Islands and the Bolaven Plateau Enjoy Laos and her natural beauty in this 4000 Islands Lao tour, a perfect extension to a Laos tour including Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Starting in Pakse, you will witness a beautifully preserved Khmer temple before heading up to Mount Asa on elephant back.

As you cruise along the Mekong River, you will see the beautiful Lao scenery before finally touching down at the 4000 Islands inlet and Southeast Asia’s biggest waterfall.

Best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March.

Day 1: Arrival in Pakse - Bolaven Plateau – Champasak

Be charmed by the small-town feel of Pakse, the most important town in Southern Laos located at the confluence of Mekong and Sedone River. After a short tour of Pakse visiting its colonial and Chinese-style buildings and the huge local market, depart for the Bolaven Plateau, to enjoy the spectacular view of cascading waterfalls in lush greenery at Tad Yuang and Tad Fane Waterfalls These impressive falls are situated on the edge of the Dong Hua Sao protected area.

After a short stop in Paksong, the small capital of coffee, continue east to reach the Sinouk Coffee Resort to learn about how the coffee trees are grown and a chance to savour different types of coffee.

On the way back to Pakse, stop at the Tad Lo waterfalls, a beautiful formation of three separate falls. The second stop is the small village of Ban Houay Houn, famous for his Katu textiles. Here, you will have the chance to observe the women weaving without a traditional loom but using their legs to stretch the fabric.

From Pakse, continue to drive south to Champasak province for approximately 1 hour and take a short boat crossing to the island of Don Daeng.

Pakse – Champasak: 30 km, 50 min

Day 2: Champasak - Vat Phou – Champasak

Visit the pre-Angkorian temple of Vat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sits amidst the rice fields and waterways of southern Laos.

Distance and journey time:

Champasak – Vat Phou: 9 km, 15 min

Day 3: Khong Island

Depart for a full day tour to visit the 4000 Islands. Take a 2-hour drive to the village of Ban Nakasan and transfer to a local boat to the peaceful island of Done Khone. Head for the Lippi Waterfalls, a local sacred site believed to trap bad spirits. View the majestic Khone Papheng considered to be the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia. Return to Champasak for overnight.

Day 4: Champasak

Enjoy a full day at leisure on the beautiful peaceful island of Don Daeng. Book one of the hotel's free bicycles and pedal your way along shady paths, talk to friendly locals, relax on sandy beaches, and enjoy the laid back pace of life in southern Laos.

Overnight in Champasak

Day 5: Champasak to Pakse

After breakfast, transfer back to Pakse to continue with your Laos adventure.
