19 May 2016 - Expert Africa'S 2016/17 brochure shines a light on Zambia’s little-known Kafue
Less developed and less well-known than Zambia’s Lower Zambezi and Luangwa regions, Kafue National Park – similar in size to Wales – offers a very varied safari experience owing to its diverse environments. Spread across an undulating plateau, it’s a mosaic of woodlands and grassy pans, veined by numerous rivers.
The Busanga Plains, in northern Kafue, is especially remarkable. Around May, when the waters from the Busanga Swamps recede, leaving behind a carpet of lush vegetation, the big game here is spectacular.
Between ‘islands’ of wild date palms, sausage trees and fig trees, huge herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and puku – amongst many other species – gather to feed; lions balance on tree branches, cheetah skulk in the shadows, and you’re likely to see packs of usually elusive wild dog.
Southern Kafue feels like a different world to the north. Anyone into offbeat adventures will love it here; the game is less prolific than in the north, and sightings require patience, but the rewards are rich as few venture here and you can really ‘own’ your wilderness experience. In several areas, the Kafue River splinters into countless individual channels, creating rapids which gush around thousands of granite boulders. Not only is this a spectacular sight, it also makes for marvellous canoeing trips.
Combining both the southern and northern halves of Kafue, the eight-day White-tailed Mongoose Safari includes stays at two owner-run properties and allows you to experience the national park by boat, safari vehicle and on foot. The trip costs from £3,592 pp (based on two sharing), including overnight flights from London, six nights’ full-board accommodation, most drinks, all transfers and activities, park fees and laundry.
